Coil turmoil: Sealy and Simmons go to the mattresses

Mattress coils may be causing some executives in the bedding business to lose sleep. For Sealy?s new Posturepedic line, the manufacturer switched from coils held together by wire to coils covered in fabric, something its competitor Simmons has been doing for 86 years. It may not sound like a big deal, but The New York Times reports that Sealy?s move has led to bitter infighting as these two companies struggle to keep their top spots. The newspaper quotes Simmons? chief executive, Gary Fazio, as saying that Sealy?s shift is major, adding that ?after having one brand and one promise to their customers and their employees, they?re suddenly switching to the Simmons system.? The Times reports that Sealy?s switch is legal, while Simmons holds patents, other mattress manufacturers have also used coils encased in fabric. This showdown is taking place in Las Vegas, a city built on sleepless nights, at a home furnishings trade show. In some ways, the mattress business has changed dramatically over the years as memory-foam mattresses, such as Tempur-Pedic, have become popular, despite their steep price tag, and bedding is now sold online and by phone. But one thing hasn?t changed. As the Times tells it, ?Consumers have a certain and unhealthy level of mistrust for the mattress industry,? said Rick Anderson, president of Tempur-Pedic North America. Now that?s a bedtime story we?ve heard before. Our readers tell us that shopping for a mattress can be a nightmare. Many retailers sell similar mattress models under different names, making it nearly impossible to comparison shop. Before heading out to the stores, pick up a few tips from our buying guide. In addition to cutting open 11 mattresses from popular brands, such as Sealy and Simmons, to see how they were constructed, 54 staffers took part in blind comfort tests (subscribers can see the findings in our mattress comparison chart). We do not rate mattresses because of the role played by personal preference and the fact that competing retailers typically do not carry the same models. But our survey of 17,444 online subscribers, available to subscribers, reveals their satisfaction with brands and stores. --Kimberly Janeway

2. If you?re doing some back yard entertaining and really want to wow your guests, show them how you captured the sun in a jar. These solar mason jars from Urban Outfitters come in blue, pink and multi-colored and are great for picnic and patio tables, or at the edge of a flower bed.

3. Let?s face it, those citronella tiki torches look nice, but they?re smoking up the whole back yard. Why not try these solar-powered tiki torches? They still add a tropical flair to your back yard without the actual flare.

4. These solar lanterns from the Solar Light Store would look great hanging around the edge of any yard. They also can be tucked in-between plants, or on the side of a deck for an even more decorative look.

5. Every Joe on the block has a standard green address marker, so why not be different? Be the first on your street to light up your address the solar way with this two-sided solar-powered address light from Amazon. The light can be mounted on an outside wall or you can use the stakes to place it closer to the road.

Corleone family compound for sale on Staten Island

More than 125 men were arrested Thursday in what's being called the "largest mob roundup in F.B.I. history." Prosecutors said 34 made members of New York?s five crime families?Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese and Luchese?as well as members of crime families in New Jersey and New England were among those detained, according to The New York Times. One place the police didn't hit in the early-morning raids was the Staten Island Tudor where Connie, the daughter of "Don" Vito Corleone, married Carlo Rizzi. The scene of the wedding in "The Godfather" is for sale. "Since it was only a movie, you'll never have to worry about mob members knocking on the door," reads the description on Top Ten Real Estate Deals. "Own the magic; own the movie history! Next time you host a big wedding, all you have to do is run the DVD to get pointers!" The eight-bedroom "Corleone Staten Island compound" is on the market for $2.9 million and features an inground pool and four-car garage, according to the realtor's website. Perhaps your home isn't quite so grand. But if you're planning to sell it, the same rules apply?make it look as good as you can. Clear out the clutter, clean everything to a fare-thee-well and arrange your furniture to highlight the home's best features. Soon you'll be getting an offer you can't refuse. ?Mary H.J. Farrell

Why do some households require to use heating oil and liquefied petroleum gasoline?

There are all-around 2.5 MM folks living in the US who are "off-grid". This usually means that they cannot get gasoline from the country's existing pipeline infrastructure. These houses have a tendency to be in much more remote rural regions, exactly where it would be expensive to extend the latest grid.

Why are folks complaining about the price?

It seems that some prices quoted to prospects this winter have risen additional quickly than prices for heating oil on the wholesale market place. For example, prices quoted by Boilerjuice.com, owned by the biggest supplier DCC, rose from 45p in mid November to practically 75p per litre by Christmas. This leap is far bigger than the rise in the wholesale market place which only went up 10pc during this period.
By this time upcoming year, the begin of a potentially new era in property heating - one particular with some added green
- will be properly underway right here.

Washington will have joined Minnesota as the 2nd state in the region that mandates the use of renewable biofuels. Quite a few of the state's house heating oil companies are welcoming the mandate, which requires impact Dec. 1 this year. They say it will focus customer attention on biodiesel as an alternative to typical house heating oil. The latter is a 100% petroleum-primarily based item.

The biofuels mandate, which the Washington Legislature adopted in 2006, requires that 2 percent of all diesel fuels offered statewide are biofuels which are produced from recycled frying oil, animal unwanted fat or vegetable oil from crops these as soybean and canola.

Industry officials said the mandate comes at an opportune time for the state's heating oil dealers,
which are primarily smaller, family-owned business. Dealers are battling for marketplace share against the state's four massive utility companies, which have claimed that normal gasoline is the cleanest and most efficient fuel source. The implication is that house heating oil is "dirty" or "inefficient," sellers say.

"The fact is that heating oil could possibly be cleaner and more efficient than all-natural fuel due to significant improvements in furnaces, particularly for home owners opting to use a blend of biodiesel mixed with standard heating oil. No modifications to an existing oil furnace are important for quite a few sorts of biodiesel," said Tim, the president of Total Furnace Repair And Warmth Pump Installation in Seattle.

The appeal of biodiesel is helping reinvigorate the entire residence heating oil industry, according to
Steve Clark, president of Genesee Fuel and Heating, which has been selling heating oil to Maple Valley and Covington residents since 1999. Oil warmth sellers reportedly are getting calls from consumers who otherwise might have transformed to healthy gas, and from men and women who like the option of buying a domestically created fuel resource from a community, family-owned business instead of a large utility corporation.

"Numerous home owners are eager to use a renewable fuel supply that decreases our country's dependence on foreign oil and helps the environment," Clark said. "We've had consumers who have bought new heating oil furnaces instead of switching to pure gasoline mainly because they're enthusiastic about supporting the expansion of biodiesel."

Until now, most Washington heating oil sellers have grown their biodiesel business by means of word of
mouth and firm newsletters. But with the state's biofuels mandate anticipated to develop demand for
twenty million gallons of biodiesel in its first yr, the prospects for biodiesel's expansion are exciting, according to industry leaders. They note that as far more Washington farmers offer their canola crops to biodiesel refineries, prices might drop, which could convince even additional clients that biodiesel is an ecological and economical way to keep warm.
