Forget the football playoffs, Sunday is National Pie Day
While some people we know will be glued to the television this Sunday, watching football, the rest of us will find ways to keep busy. Thank goodness it?s National Pie Day. That?s right, a day to celebrate pie?baking pies, eating pies, and sharing pies with friends and neighbors. The American Pie Council created this celebration and works to preserve America?s pie heritage and raise awareness, and consumption, of pies. January 23 is as good a day as any to celebrate pie, except maybe for March 14, or 3.14 (for Pi). In case you thought the cupcake craze had made pies pass, The New York Times reports that pies are trendy and innovation abounds, and speculates that maybe the cupcake crowd took it too far, what with flavors like turkey cranberry with gravy. In pie circles, bakers and pastry chefs are adding sea salt and caramel to apple pie and even using 10-inch springform pans to make pies with higher crusts. If all this talk about pie has your mouth watering, take out your favorite recipes, or choose one from the American Pie Council, Epicurious, or Real Baking with Rose. And if you need a new range to bake that pie, be sure to see our free buying advice and Ratings, available to subscribers, of 44 electric ranges, including induction, and 57 gas ranges, including dual-fuel models. ?Kimberly Janeway
